This handmade pleated apron hails from the Kalotaszeg region in northwest Transylvania, Romania, which is known for its unique and ornate traditional attire. Specifically, the apron comes from the Cluj folkloric region and is a beautiful representation of the region's style.
Crafted from black cotton material, the apron is adorned with a lovely blue and green pattern, while the pleats are made by hand using a local technique. The decorative stitching is also done by hand with blue, green, and black silk thread, and the apron features black bead embellishments.
Measuring 81 cm (31.9 inches) in length, this flowing apron has a beautiful drape that highlights its fluid design. The waistband is 33 cm (15 inches) around the waist and comes with cord ties for adjustment. The embroidered pattern at the waistband is approximately 38-40 cm (15-15.74 inches) in width.
This particular apron is estimated to be from the 1970s or 1980s and is in excellent condition without any signs of wear or damage. To preserve its integrity, it is recommended to dry clean only. Although traditionally Hungarian, this apron is also worn by Romanians from Cluj, Salaj, and certain areas of Arad, making it a testament to the cultural richness of the Transylvania.
