This is an antique Romanian traditional headscarf, known as a marama, made of handwoven raw silk fabric, locally called "borangic". A refined and delicate piece, the voile features fine horizontal silk stripes that add texture and elegance.
Origin: Oltenia, Romania
Dimensions: 250 cm x 53 cm (approx. 98.4 x 20.8 inches)
Historically, this type of headscarf was part of the traditional costume worn by married women in Oltenia, Muntenia, and Moldova. It represents a significant element of Romanian cultural heritage.
Condition: Fair vintage condition, with visible signs of wear consistent with its age (estimated 70–100 years old). The natural irregularities in the weave reflect both age and authentic use, enhancing its character. There are some brownish stains embedded in the fabric. Although the marama has been gently washed using mild detergents, the stains remain. However, when wrapped around the hair as traditionally worn, the marks are barely visible. The price fairly reflects these imperfections.
Color: Pale beige with a warm ivory/yellowish hue
This unique handwoven marama, with its fine silk texture and traditional craftsmanship, is a rare and beautiful piece of Romanian folk art. It is ideal for collectors of traditional clothing, museum collections, or as a historically accurate accessory to accompany an authentic Romanian women’s costume from Oltenia, Muntenia, or Moldova.
