Splendid very old ethnic Hungarian table cloth from Transylvania, Tara Calatei / Kalotaszeg region. It is hand sewn with the typical embroidery of the Hungarians from this area, "written embroidery" made with cotton thread on linen cloth and hand woven hemp. The canvas remains in its natural color, it is not bleached, so it has an earth tone, a natural beige, made of linen fiber. The embroidery is made with red cotton thread.
Initially, I think this ancient textile piece was a wall hanging because it still has hand-sewn hooks on the back. So it can still be used as a wall hanging or if you remove the hangers as a table centerpiece for a very large table.
Dimensions: 166 cm x 42 cm (65.35 inches x 16.53 inches)
Age: probably dated in the 1930s-1950s
Condition: slightly faded embroidery, without any other defects.
A wonderful piece of Hungarian antique embroidery from Transylvania.
