This is a superb, traditional Romanian costume from Transylvania, the Sicula/Arad region, with a rich history dating back many years. It is hand-embroidered with beautiful floral patterns and adorned with delicate lace. The fabric is a combination of handwoven linen and hemp. The folk costume consists of two pieces: a Romanian traditional blouse and a high-waisted traditional skirt, both lavishly embroidered.
The Romanian blouse features a lace collar around neck . The fitted cuffs fasten with drawnstrings, while the sleeves are voluminous. Here are the measurements for a size S-M or M:
Neck circumference: 34 cm (13.38 inches)
Shoulder width: 39 cm (15.35 inches)
Shoulder and sleeve length including the cuff : 64 cm or 25.2 "
Length: 55 cm (21.65 inches)
Chest circumference: 124 cm (48.8 inches)
Sleeve seam circumference around the shoulder: 46 cm (18 inches)
The cuff is richly hand embroidered . The sleeves are decorated with colored embroidery ( cross stitch ) and also a row of lace .
Despite its age, the Romanian blouse is in excellent condition without any defects.
The skirt is gathered at the high waist and fastened at the back with strings. The waist circumference measures 79 cm (31.1 inches) as it is, but it is typically worn slightly overlapped. The length of the skirt, measured from the waist (excluding the high waist), is 63 cm (24.8 inches). The high waist has a height of 12 cm (4.7 inches). The hem circumference is 280 cm (110 inches).
It is gorgeous hand embroidered around lower hem with hand embroidery similar ( not identical ! ) we find on the Romanian blouse .
Overall, this Romanian traditional costume is in good condition with minimal signs of wear. May be few stains here and there on the skirt but not very noticeable This is a magnificent costume suitable for museums, collectors, and its remarkable condition allows for approximately 50 more years of wear. Based on its characteristics, it is most likely dated from the 1940s to 1950s.
