Vintage Romanian folk decorative towel from Oltenia

A large Romanian decorative folk towel, hand-sewn on thin homemade fabric, the finest traditionally handwoven fabric.

This traditional towel is hand-embroidered with blue and red flowers. At the ends, it is left unfinished, perhaps that's how it should be ; I would hem it.

In times gone by, these were displayed in guest rooms, adorning icons, walls and windows. They were also offered as precious gifts to distinguished guests at weddings and baptisms. Any wealthier family had such textiles carefully stored or displayed in their best rooms, alongside handwoven wool carpets and painted ceramics, adding charm to traditional Romanian interiors.
