This remarkable traditional Romanian costume originates from the Sicula region, Arad, and is suitable for sizes M-L or L. It consists of three pieces: an old Romanian traditional blouse (spacel), an old skirt (poala), and a restored apron (șorț).
Both the Romanian traditional blouse and skirt are hand-sewn on vintage homespun fabric made of a blend of hemp, linen, and a bit of cotton, giving the fabric a beige tone. This is an extremely old costume, worthy of a museum collection. The embroidery is done with red and black cotton thread, and the cuffs are adorned with multicolored woolen embroidery. A ribbon decorates the cuffs, which in the past appears to have bled during washing, but it no longer releases color.
The blouse was widened at the neckline long ago, with an extension on the back, which is also old and hand-sewn. As shown in the last photos, the traditional shirt was lengthened using old fabric, and the underarm panels (icuri) were replaced.
There are no defects, except for a few small inorganic yellow stains on the back (as seen in the last three photos). These stains are not visible when worn but do exist. I have been unable to remove them, despite washing and sanitizing the costume, which is otherwise in very good condition.
Measurements for the Romanian blouse (spacel):
Shoulder width: 45 cm (17.7 inches)
Distance from shoulder to underarm: 22 cm (8.6 inches), making the sleeve opening 44 cm (17.3 inches), which is a decent size for Transylvanian shirts, as these tend to run small in this area.
Shoulder + sleeve + cuff length: 72 cm (28.3 inches)
Cuff circumference: 16 cm (6.3 inches), with original loops for string fastening and more recently added buttons (likely when the neckline was widened).
Blouse length: 65 cm (25.5 inches)
Chest circumference: 140 cm (55.1 inches)
Measurements for the Romanian folk skirt (poala):
The old skirt has a waist circumference of 108 cm (42.5 inches). It ties at the waist, and for smaller waists, the slit overlaps, which is concealed by the apron. The skirt is slightly darker than the blouse, as it contains more hemp and may not have been washed as frequently. Hemp fabric tends to lighten over time with washing and exposure to sunlight or cold.
Skirt length: 75 cm (29.5 inches)
Skirt circumference: 240 cm (94.4 inches)
Romanian folk apron (șorț):
The apron has been restored. The upper half, which lacks embroidery, was replaced by us with vintage fabric, as the original was in extremely poor condition.
Waist: 45 cm (17.7 inches)
Length: 75 cm (29.5 inches)
Aprons from this region are incredibly rare, making this costume an exceptional find for collectors and enthusiasts of Romanian traditional wear.
