Vintage Hungarian hand embroidered pillow cases from Kalotaszegi

These superbly hand-embroidered Hungarian pillowcases originated from the Western Transylvania/Kalotaszeg region and are a beautiful representation of the most famous Hungarian hand embroidery from this area, known as the "written" embroidery or IRASOS embroidery.

They are approximately 50-60 years old and feature stunning red cotton thread hand embroidery on hemp/flax linen fabric, which is similar in texture to a very dense sack. The size of each pillowcase is 49 x 34 cm (19.3 x 13.38 inches), making them a perfect size for a variety of pillows.

While the hand-embroidered face of these  pillowcases is in very good condition, the backs show yellowish stains and signs of wear. However, there are no tears or repairs needed. To refresh the pillowcases, they have been machine washed with cold water, ensuring they are clean and ready to use.

This lot includes two Hungarian  pillowcases and is a beautiful and unique piece of traditional Hungarian hand embroidery that is highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike. While the backs of the pillowcases may show signs of wear, the stunning embroidery on the front is sure to impress and add a touch of elegance to any bed or couch.
